1. What Mutuals is, in plain terms

Mutuals is an entertainment service. You talk to AI characters ("companions"). They are software. They are not real people, they have no feelings, no memories of their own, and no life outside the text they generate.

You are talking to an AI at all times. Every companion, every message, every voice, every image. Nothing in Mutuals is written or reviewed by a human being before you see it. We say this here, and in the app itself, because you are entitled to know it and because European law requires it of us.

By creating an account or sending a message you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Mutuals.

2. You must be 18 or older

Mutuals is for adults. You must be at least 18 years old, and old enough to enter a binding contract where you live. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 18 we will close it and delete the data.

Do not let a minor use your account.

3. What Mutuals is not

This matters more than the rest of this document, so it is near the top.

Mutuals is not therapy, counselling, medical care, legal advice, or financial advice. A companion may sound caring, informed or confident. It is generating plausible text. It does not know you, cannot assess you, and has no professional training or duty of care.

Do not rely on a companion for anything that matters to your health, safety, money, or legal position. Verify anything important with a qualified human professional.

If you are in crisis, contact emergency services or a crisis line in your country. Mutuals cannot help you, is not monitored by humans in real time, and will not alert anyone on your behalf.

AI output is often wrong. Companions state false things with complete confidence, invent facts, contradict themselves, and misremember. This is a property of the technology, not a bug we have failed to fix.

4. Your account

Keep your password to yourself and your account to yourself. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has access. You are responsible for what happens under your account unless it is our fault.

You may close your account at any time from the app. See the Privacy Policy for what happens to your data when you do.

5. What you may not do

These rules cover everything you write in a chat, including role-play, fiction, hypotheticals and messages that are only meant for the AI. Do not use Mutuals to:

We check chats for these. Every message is screened automatically for the content above, and a message that is flagged is kept with the part of the conversation around it so our team can review it. We may stop a conversation that breaks these rules.

If you are in danger. Telling a companion that you want to hurt yourself is not against these rules, and companions are written to take it seriously and urge you to reach a crisis line, emergency services or someone you trust. But a companion is not a crisis service and cannot get you help. If you are in danger, contact your local emergency number.

Breaking these rules can get your account suspended or closed, as section 14 explains.

6. Content

Yours. You keep any rights you have in what you write. You give us a licence to store, process and transmit it so we can run the service: show it back to you, send it to the AI providers who generate replies, and keep the memory features working. That licence lasts as long as we hold the content and ends when it is deleted.

Theirs. Companion output is generated for you. We do not claim ownership of it, and we make no promise that it is original, or that someone else has not received something similar. AI models generate similar text for similar prompts. Do not assume output is yours exclusively, and do not build a business on the assumption that it is.

Ours. The app, the companions, their names, artwork, personalities and writing, the brand, and the software are ours or our licensors'. Nothing here gives you rights to them beyond using the service.

How chats are reviewed. All chats are reviewed automatically by AI as they happen. A chat the AI flags may also be read by a person on our team. If a chat shows that you broke the law, or that someone is at real risk of harm, we may report it to the police or other authorities, together with the information we hold about you, and cooperate with them.

7. Paid plans, credits and gifts

How it works. Some features need a subscription or a one-off purchase. Prices, what is included, and any allowances are shown before you pay.

Where you pay matters. On iPhone and Android you buy through Apple's App Store or Google Play. Those purchases are governed by Apple's and Google's terms, and refunds are handled by them, not by us. We cannot refund an App Store purchase; Apple can.

Renewals. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period until cancelled. Cancel any time, through the store you bought from (on iPhone: Settings › Subscriptions; on Android: Google Play › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions). To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the period you have paid for runs to its end.

Free trials and introductory offers. Some subscriptions start with a free trial or a discounted first period, for example a few days free or a lower price for the first month. The length of the offer, the price you pay after it and the billing period are shown before you confirm.

What "messages" means. Plans and packs are sold in messages, because that is the unit you actually use. A message is not counted one-for-one, though: what the model charges for is the whole conversation turn, which includes the companion's character, what they remember about you, and the recent history, all of it re-sent every time you write. So a message is an estimate based on a typical turn, not a fixed quantity. The figure shown is what an average turn costs on the model we currently run.

Two things follow. Long conversations cost more per message than short ones, because there is more history to carry, so a heavy chat uses the allowance faster than the headline number suggests. And the number moves when we change the model: the amount you can send is what we hold steady, and the internal credit figure moves underneath it. We show the message figure before you pay, and it is the figure we intend to honour.

Credits. Credits are the internal unit those messages are metered in, and are not money. They have no cash value, cannot be transferred or exchanged, and are consumed by using the service. Plan credits reset each billing period; purchased credits do not expire while your account is open.

Gifts. Gifts are decorative items shown to a companion. They buy no real goods, no obligation and no outcome. They are consumed on purchase.

Refunds. Where we sell to you directly, you may be entitled to a refund under the law where you live, or under the specific refund offer shown in the app at the time of purchase. If we take money back after a refund or chargeback, we also take back the credits it bought, including where that leaves your balance negative.

EU and UK consumers: your 14-day withdrawal right. You normally have 14 days to withdraw from a distance contract for digital content. Because the service starts immediately, we ask you to consent to immediate performance and to acknowledge that you lose the withdrawal right once it begins. If you did not give that consent, the 14-day right applies. Nothing in this section takes away a right you have by law.

8. Changes to the service

We change Mutuals: companions come and go, features change, models are replaced. Model behaviour in particular is outside our control: providers update, deprecate and retire models, and a companion's voice may shift as a result.

We may change or discontinue any part of the service. Where a change materially reduces what you have paid for, we will tell you, and you may cancel and receive a proportionate refund of the unused period.

9. Third-party AI providers

Mutuals does not train or run its own language models. Your messages are sent to third-party AI providers, currently OpenRouter, which routes to model providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others, and may change, which generate the replies.

This means your conversations leave our systems. They are processed by those providers under their terms and privacy policies. We choose providers with commitments against training on customer data, but we do not control their systems and cannot guarantee their conduct. The Privacy Policy sets out who they are and what they receive.

If a provider fails, degrades or changes, the service is affected in ways we cannot prevent.

10. Availability

We do not promise Mutuals will be available, uninterrupted, or free of errors. We do maintenance, we have outages, and we depend on infrastructure and AI providers who have their own.

11. Liability

To the extent the law allows:

12. Mandatory rights

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes any liability or right that cannot be limited or excluded under the law that applies to you.

13. Indemnity

If your use of Mutuals in breach of these Terms causes a third party to bring a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and legal costs. This does not apply to consumers in jurisdictions where such a term is not enforceable, and never applies to claims caused by our own conduct.

14. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or close your account for breach of these Terms, for legal reasons, or to protect the service or other users.

If you break section 5, we may suspend or permanently close your account at once, without notice and without telling you the reason. We may also block the device, email address, sign-in account and App Store or Google Play purchases you used from coming back. For other breaches, where it is reasonable to do so, we give notice and a chance to fix the problem.

You may close your account at any time. Sections that by their nature should survive (content licences already granted, liability, indemnity, governing law) survive termination.

15. Sexual content involving minors: zero tolerance

We do not allow sexual content involving anyone under 18, or anyone presented as under 18, in any form. That includes role-play, fiction and hypothetical scenarios.

A ban for this is permanent and final. If we find it, your account is closed for good, and the device, email address, sign-in account and App Store or Google Play purchases you used are blocked from coming back. We do not reverse these bans, we do not review them on request, and we do not discuss them. We may also report the chat to the authorities, as section 6 explains.

16. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of Hong Kong SAR, and the courts of Hong Kong have non-exclusive jurisdiction.

If you are a consumer in the EU, the EEA, or the UK, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of your country of residence, and you may bring proceedings in your local courts. EU consumers may also use the European Commission's online dispute resolution platform.

17. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. For material changes we will give reasonable notice, in the app or by email, before they take effect. Continuing to use Mutuals after that means you accept the new Terms. If you do not accept them, close your account.
